Wix vs ctrl.alt.elite
An honest side-by-side. Cost, setup, design, changes, lock-in. Where Wix wins, where we do, and how to choose between them.
01 / Two different shapes of product
Wix is a tool. We are a service.
It is tempting to compare Wix and ctrl.alt.elite as if they were two versions of the same thing. They are not. Wix is a website builder you operate yourself, with a powerful editor, thousands of templates, and a low monthly price. ctrl.alt.elite is a subscription web design service where someone else builds and operates the site for you, with a higher monthly price and zero hands-on time.
Comparing them on price alone is unfair to Wix because it makes the cheaper option look obviously better. Comparing them on hands-off-ness alone is unfair to us because it makes the more expensive option look obviously better. The right comparison is which shape fits your situation.
This page lays out where each one wins, where each one loses, and the kind of small business each one suits. There is no scoring, no winner, and no hit piece. Just an honest side-by-side from someone who has used Wix and built sites by hand.
02 / Side by side
Six dimensions, honest verdicts
Cost, setup, design, changes, hosting and lock-in. The fair comparisons across both.
Cost: Wix wins on day one
Wix Premium plans start around £12/month and run to roughly £35/month for the higher tiers. ctrl.alt.elite is £79/month flat. On the headline cost, Wix is cheaper. On the total cost including your time, the picture changes once you count the hours you spend in the editor.
Setup: Wix is faster, ours is hands-off
A Wix site can be live in an afternoon if you accept a template and do the work yourself. Ours takes two to three weeks but you do none of the work. The right comparison is not speed, it is whether you want to drive the build or have someone else drive it.
Design: ours is custom, Wix is template-led
Wix has thousands of templates and a powerful editor for tweaking them. The trade-off is that the visual baseline is shared with millions of other sites. Our designs start blank, so the result is unique to your business.
Changes: Wix is on you, ours are on us
On Wix, every change is your job. New page, new prices, new photos, new layout: log in and do it. With us, you message a person in UK hours via the portal and the change is live the same day. Two different units of effort.
Hosting and maintenance: included on both, very different scope
Wix bundles hosting, SSL and basic backups in the plan. We bundle hosting, SSL, daily backups, monitoring, security patches, image optimisation, performance audits and unlimited reasonable changes. Same word, different scope.
Lock-in: both light, both clean
Wix lets you take your domain when you leave but the site itself is tied to Wix. We let you take the domain and the content and do not lock you into a year. Both are honest about exit, which is more than can be said for older one-off web design contracts.
03 / How to choose
Four questions before you pick
If you love editing your own site
Wix is the right tool. The editor is genuinely powerful, the templates are decent, and the price is low. Stop reading this page and go to wix.com.
If you have time but not skill
Wix can still work, with patience. You will spend your evenings figuring out the editor and your weekends fixing the mobile layout. The website will get built. The cost is the time.
If you have neither time nor skill
This is where the model splits. Wix becomes a half-finished project that nags you. We become a website you can ignore because it is being looked after.
If the business is busy
Most small business owners with a busy operation cannot afford to be the web designer too. The honest math is whether the £67 difference per month is worth more than the hours you would otherwise spend in an editor.
FAQ
Common questions
Is ctrl.alt.elite better than Wix?
Better is the wrong word. Different. Wix is a tool, we are a service. If you want to drive the build yourself, Wix is genuinely good and we would not pretend otherwise. If you want someone else to drive it, our model fits. Neither is universally better.
Can I move from Wix to you later?
Yes. We migrate Wix sites regularly. We pull the content out, redesign from a blank canvas, set up 301 redirects from the old Wix URLs, and move the domain and email forwarding. You stop paying Wix and your URL keeps working.
Will I save money by switching from Wix?
On the monthly bill, no. £79 is more than a Wix Premium plan. On the total cost including your time, almost always yes once you count the hours you would otherwise spend in the editor at an honest hourly rate.
Is Wix worse for SEO?
Not inherently. Wix sites can rank perfectly well for small business searches. The risk is not the platform, it is the templates encouraging long, image-heavy pages that load slowly on mobile. We optimise mobile speed obsessively, which is one of the biggest single SEO wins.
What if I started on Wix and outgrew it?
That is the most common reason we get migration requests. The answer is not to fight the editor harder, it is to move to a model where someone else does the editing. We migrate, redesign, host, and look after the site from then on.
What is the honest weakness of your model versus Wix?
If you want to log in and tweak something at midnight, you cannot. Changes go through us in UK working hours. For owners who enjoy hands-on control, that is a downgrade. For most small business owners, it is the whole point.
