Squarespace vs ctrl.alt.elite
An honest side-by-side. Cost, setup, design, changes, support, lock-in. Where each one wins and how to choose.
01 / Different shapes for different owners
Squarespace is a polished tool. We are a polished service.
Squarespace and ctrl.alt.elite both end with you having a website. That is most of what they have in common. Squarespace is a website builder you operate yourself, with strong templates and a clean editor. We are a subscription service where someone else operates the build and the maintenance for you. Same end product, very different journeys.
Comparing them on price is easy and misleading. Squarespace is cheaper. Comparing them on quality is hard and equally misleading: both can produce great sites, the deciding factor is who is at the keyboard. The honest comparison is which one fits your time, your skills and your appetite for editing.
This page lays out where Squarespace wins, where we do, and what each one is genuinely worse at than the other. No scoring, no winner declared, no hit piece. Just the trade-offs as we see them.
02 / Side by side
Six honest comparisons
Cost, setup, design, changes, support, lock-in. The dimensions that matter for a small business owner picking between them.
Cost: Squarespace is cheaper on the bill
Squarespace plans run roughly £14 to £44 a month depending on tier. ctrl.alt.elite is £79/month flat. On the headline, Squarespace wins. The fair comparison adds the time you spend in the editor or the cost of hiring someone to drive it for you.
Setup: same shape, different effort
Squarespace can be live in a weekend if you accept a template and do the work. Ours takes two to three weeks of our time and almost none of yours. The faster path is whichever one matches who you want doing the work.
Design quality: Squarespace is template-strong, we are bespoke
Squarespace templates are arguably the best on any DIY platform. Their downside is that they are also being used by thousands of other small businesses. Our designs are blank-canvas custom, which means visual uniqueness and a layout shaped to your specific offer.
Changes: Squarespace is on you, ours via the portal
Squarespace expects you to log in and edit. Our model expects you to message a person. Both work. Which one fits depends on whether you have time and skill, or you would rather hand it off entirely.
Support: Squarespace is docs and email, we are a real person
Squarespace support is helpful but ticket-based and platform-wide. Our support is the same person who designed your site, available in UK hours. The difference matters most when you are trying to ship a change before a Friday afternoon deadline.
Lock-in: both light, both clean
Squarespace lets you take your domain when you leave. We let you take the domain and the content. Neither of us locks you into a year. The difference is that Squarespace is the platform you leave to, and we are the team you leave from.
03 / Choosing between them
Four questions to answer first
If design polish out of the box matters most
Squarespace templates are gorgeous. If visual polish on day one is the priority and you are happy to operate the editor, Squarespace is hard to beat at the price.
If you want a custom design, not a template
We start blank every time. The result is a layout that fits the offer rather than one chosen from a list. Same monthly fee whether the build is simple or complex.
If you have time to drive the editor
Squarespace is genuinely usable for owners who enjoy building their own site. If that is you, the lower bill makes sense and the alternative is overkill.
If you do not have time to drive the editor
This is where the model splits. The £67 difference per month buys you the absence of the editor and a real designer making decisions on your behalf.
FAQ
Common questions
Is Squarespace better than ctrl.alt.elite?
It depends on what you want to do yourself. Squarespace is one of the best DIY tools on the market and in the right hands the result is excellent. We are a different shape: a service that takes the editing off your plate entirely. Neither is universally better, they fit different owners.
Will my Squarespace site look better than what you build?
Out of the box, Squarespace templates are very polished. A custom hand-built site can match or beat them visually but the quality depends on the designer rather than the tool. We share previews before any commitment so you can judge directly.
Can I migrate from Squarespace to you?
Yes, regularly. We pull the content out, redesign it from scratch, set up 301 redirects from every old Squarespace URL to the new equivalent, migrate the domain and email forwarding, and cut over with no downtime. Search rankings carry across.
Is your monthly price worth it compared to Squarespace?
If you enjoy editing your own site, no. Squarespace is cheaper and it gives you the controls. If you do not enjoy editing your own site and would rather hand it off, our monthly price covers both the design and the work that would otherwise be yours, which usually nets out cheaper across a year.
What about Squarespace Commerce?
If you have a real product catalogue with stock, shipping and returns, Squarespace Commerce or Shopify is probably the right home for that and we will say so. For service businesses or small product ranges, we can integrate Stripe checkout into a hand-built site without the platform overhead.
What is the honest weakness of switching from Squarespace to you?
You lose the ability to log in and tweak the site at midnight. For some owners that is a downgrade. For most, it is the whole point of the model: the site is being looked after by someone else and you do not have to think about it.
